(Los Angeles) A truck driver who was sentenced to 110 years in prison for killing four people in a traffic accident in the US state of Colorado has had his sentence reduced to 10 years on Thursday after a severe online mobilization.
More than 5 million people, including reality star Kim Kardashian, have appealed in an online petition for Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, who has been sentenced to at least 110 years in prison under Colorado law.
The length of the sentence was “not commensurate with your actions, nor with the penalties imposed on others for similar offenses,” Colorado Governor Jared Police said Thursday. Said in a letter to Aguilera-Maduros.
“There is an urgent need to correct this unjust sentence and restore confidence in our criminal justice system and justice, so I have decided to reduce your sentence now,” he added.
Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, a Cuban immigrant, lost his brakes in April 2019 when he was unloading firewood without using the emergency exit.
In its frantic rush, his truck struck a pile of 28 vehicles, killing four people and injuring several others.
Mr. Aguilera-Mederos was found guilty of all 27 charges against him. Trucker is eligible to apply for parole from December 2026.
